The Old German Court House, Apia

  1. The following was written by Marj Moore and appeared in the Samoan Ovserver 14/05/2011:

"Situated on Beach Road, Apia, the Court House was built in 1903 under the German administration and was also in use when New Zealand governed Samoa.

It housed the first Government of Samoa after Independence in 1962 and until 2010, the Court of Samoa dispensed justice from it.

It is also on the corner of the road where on 28 December in 1929, the New Zealand military police fired on a peaceful procession of Mau protesters, turning the day into violence and the event to become known as Black Saturday.

Up to 11 Samoans were killed, including Mau leader and high chief, Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III with many others wounded. One New Zealand constable was also killed.

In short, the area is steeped in history."

(The present debate is: will it be restored and preserved, or not?)
